The Zaisan Memorial

The Zaisan Memorial, also known as the Zaisan Monumental Hall, is one of the most iconic viewpoints and historical landmarks in Ulaanbaatar. Located on a hill south of the city, the memorial offers visitors both a powerful reminder of Mongolia’s 20th-century history and one of the best panoramic views of the capital.

Built in 1971, the monument honors the friendship between Mongolia and the Soviet Union and commemorates Mongolian and Soviet soldiers who fought together during World War II. At the top of the hill stands a large circular structure decorated with a colorful socialist-style mosaic mural. The artwork depicts scenes of cooperation, peace, and shared military history between the two nations.

Reaching the monument requires climbing a long staircase, but the reward is a breathtaking 360-degree view of Ulaanbaatar, with the Tuul River, city skyline, and surrounding mountains stretching into the distance. The site is especially popular at sunset, when the city is bathed in golden light.

For travelers interested in history, photography, or simply enjoying a scenic walk, the Zaisan Memorial is a must-visit attraction in Ulaanbaatar, combining cultural meaning with one of the most memorable views in the city.
