Meeting the Eagle Hunters

Meeting the Eagle Hunters is one of the most unique and unforgettable cultural experiences in western Mongolia, offering travelers a rare glimpse into the ancient traditions of the Kazakh nomadic people. Found mainly in the Altai Mountain region, Kazakh families have practiced the art of hunting with golden eagles for centuries, passing this remarkable skill from generation to generation.

Visitors are welcomed into a Kazakh family’s traditional felt yurt, where they can learn about daily life in the high mountains, from herding livestock to preparing traditional meals. The highlight of the visit is watching an eagle hunter demonstrate the bond between human and bird, as the powerful golden eagle responds to hand signals and flies across the open valleys to return to its trainer.

Travelers can also see traditional clothing made of fur and embroidery, as well as the special equipment used for eagle training, such as leather gloves, hoods, and hunting gear. Stories and legends shared by the family add a deeper cultural meaning to the experience.

Set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks, wide valleys, and open skies, meeting the eagle hunters offers more than just a demonstration—it provides a genuine connection to Mongolia’s living heritage. For many travelers, this cultural encounter becomes one of the most meaningful and memorable moments of their journey through the Altai region.
