Ulaan Tsutgalan

Ulaan Tsutgalan, also known as the Orkhon Waterfall, is one of Mongolia’s most spectacular natural landmarks and a highlight of the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in Övörkhangai Province, this powerful waterfall plunges about 20 meters into a wide basalt canyon, creating a dramatic and refreshing contrast to the surrounding open steppe.

Formed thousands of years ago by volcanic eruptions and earthquake activity along the Orkhon River, the waterfall cuts through ancient lava rock, giving the area a unique and rugged appearance. In summer, the rushing water creates mist and rainbows, while in winter the falls often freeze into stunning ice formations, making it beautiful in every season.

The surrounding landscape is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and camping. Visitors can walk down to the base of the falls, explore nearby lava caves, and enjoy panoramic views from the cliffs above. Nomadic families often camp in the area during warmer months, offering travelers a chance to experience traditional ger life and local hospitality.

With its combination of natural beauty, geological history, and cultural surroundings, Ulaan Tsutgalan is a must-visit destination for travelers exploring central Mongolia. It is often included on travel routes connecting Kharkhorin, Tsenkher Hot Springs, and the Orkhon Valley, making it a perfect stop on a scenic journey through the heart of the country.
