Tsagaan Suvarga

White Stupa, locally known as Tsagaan Suvarga, is one of the most striking and photogenic natural landmarks in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert. Located in Dundgovi Province, this dramatic escarpment of wind-carved cliffs rises sharply from the open steppe, creating a landscape that resembles an ancient city or a line of giant white fortresses.

The name “Tsagaan Suvarga” means “White Stupa,” inspired by the pale limestone formations that glow in shades of white, pink, and orange as the sunlight changes throughout the day. Over millions of years, wind and water erosion have shaped the cliffs into towering columns, narrow ridges, and deep ravines, making the area a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers.

Geologically, the site is rich in marine fossils, showing that this part of Mongolia was once covered by an ancient sea. Visitors can sometimes spot shells and other fossil remains embedded in the rock, adding a fascinating historical dimension to the landscape.

The open, quiet surroundings offer a peaceful and almost otherworldly atmosphere. Travelers can walk along the cliff edges, explore the canyons below, and enjoy sweeping views of the vast desert plains. For those exploring central and southern Mongolia, White Stupa is a must-visit destination that combines natural beauty, geological history, and unforgettable scenery.
