Sukhbaatar square

Sukhbaatar Square is the central and most important public space in Ulaanbaatar, serving as the political, cultural, and social heart of the city. Located in front of the Government Palace, the square is named after Damdin Sükhbaatar, the leader of Mongolia’s 1921 revolution and a national hero who played a key role in establishing the modern Mongolian state.

At the center of the square stands the equestrian statue of Sukhbaatar, unveiled in 1946. The statue marks the spot where he is believed to have declared Mongolia’s independence and symbolizes courage, leadership, and national pride. Sükhbaatar is depicted on horseback, raising his arm forward, a powerful image that reflects Mongolia’s strong historical connection to horsemanship and freedom.

The square itself is surrounded by important landmarks, including the Government Palace, which features a grand colonnade and a large statue of Genghis Khan flanked by his generals and successors. The open space often hosts national celebrations, military parades, cultural festivals, and public gatherings, making it a lively and meaningful place to visit.

For travelers, Sükhbaatar Square offers a perfect starting point to explore the city. Whether visiting during a quiet morning or a festive event, it provides a clear sense of Mongolia’s history, modern identity, and civic life, making it a must-visit attraction in Ulaanbaatar.
