Khorgo–Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake

Khorgo–Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park is one of Mongolia’s most scenic and diverse natural destinations, combining dramatic volcanic landscapes with peaceful lakeside views. Located in Arkhangai Province in the heart of the Khangai Mountains, the park offers travelers a unique mix of rugged terrain, open grasslands, and crystal-clear freshwater.

One of the park’s main highlights is the Khorgo Volcano, an extinct volcano that last erupted around 8,000 years ago. Visitors can hike up to the crater’s edge and walk across vast black lava fields formed by ancient eruptions, creating an almost lunar landscape. Nearby, lava caves and unusual rock formations add to the area’s geological fascination.

At the center of the park lies Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake (White Lake), one of Mongolia’s largest freshwater lakes. Formed when lava flows blocked the Suman River, the lake is surrounded by rolling hills and forested slopes, making it a perfect place for camping, fishing, swimming in summer, and birdwatching.

The park is also rich in cultural heritage. Nomadic families still graze their livestock across the valleys, and visitors can stay in traditional ger camps, enjoy horseback riding, and experience local hospitality. Ancient stone monuments and burial mounds scattered throughout the area reflect the region’s long history of human settlement.

With its blend of volcanic history, serene lakes, and traditional nomadic life, Khorgo–Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility in central Mongolia.
