Bayanzag (Flaming cliffs)

Bayanzag, famously known as the Flaming Cliffs, is one of Mongolia’s most legendary and visually striking natural and historical attractions. Located in the heart of the Gobi Desert in Ömnögovi Province, this area is world-renowned for its dramatic red sandstone cliffs that glow in shades of orange and gold, especially at sunset, giving the site its fiery name.

Beyond its beauty, Bayanzag holds an important place in world history and science. In the 1920s, American explorer and paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews made groundbreaking discoveries here, including the world’s first scientifically recognized dinosaur eggs and numerous fossilized skeletons. These findings placed Mongolia on the global map as one of the most important regions for dinosaur research.

Visitors can walk along the cliffs, explore sandy ravines, and see areas where fossils were uncovered, while learning about the ancient creatures that once lived in this now-arid landscape. Informational signs and guided tours help bring the site’s prehistoric past to life.

The surrounding area also offers a chance to experience traditional nomadic culture, with camel herds, wide desert plains, and nearby ger camps where travelers can stay and enjoy Mongolian hospitality. For photographers, history lovers, and adventure seekers, Bayanzag provides a unique combination of natural beauty, scientific significance, and cultural experience, making it a must-visit destination in the Gobi Desert and one of Mongolia’s most iconic landmarks.
