Gobi Gurvan Saikhan

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park is one of Mongolia’s largest and most diverse protected areas and a true highlight of the Gobi Desert. Established in 1993, the park covers more than 27,000 square kilometers in Ömnögovi Province, making it one of the biggest national parks in the country. Its name, meaning “Three Beauties of the Gobi,” refers to the three major mountain ranges — Zuun Saikhan, Dund Saikhan, and Baruun Saikhan — that rise dramatically from the surrounding desert plains and shape the park’s stunning landscape.

The park is famous for its incredible variety of natural scenery. Within a single area, visitors can experience rocky mountains, deep canyons, wide steppe grasslands, desert plains, and towering sand dunes. This unique mix of environments supports a wide range of plant and animal life and offers travelers a rare chance to see how different ecosystems exist side by side in the heart of the Gobi.

One of the most popular attractions is Yolyn Am (Vulture Valley), a narrow gorge carved through the mountains where thick ice can remain on the valley floor even during the summer. Visitors can walk along the canyon, enjoy the cool shade, and spot birds of prey such as lammergeiers and vultures soaring above the cliffs. The valley has long been an important natural landmark for local nomadic herders and a favorite destination for hikers and photographers.

Another iconic feature of the park is Khongoryn Els, the largest sand dune system in Mongolia. These dunes stretch for more than 100 kilometers and rise up to 300 meters high, creating a dramatic sea of golden sand. Known as the “Singing Dunes,” they produce a deep, humming sound when the wind moves across the slopes or when people slide down the sand. Climbing to the top rewards visitors with sweeping views of the desert and distant mountains, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan is also one of Mongolia’s most important areas for wildlife conservation. The park is home to rare and endangered species such as the wild Bactrian camel, snow leopard, Gobi bear (Mazaalai), ibex, and argali sheep, as well as foxes, wolves, and many species of birds. Because of this, the park plays a key role in protecting some of Central Asia’s most threatened animals and their fragile desert habitats.

In addition to its natural beauty, the park offers visitors a chance to experience traditional nomadic life. Travelers can stay with local herding families in traditional gers (yurts), ride camels across the desert, and learn about the customs and daily life of people who have lived in harmony with this harsh environment for generations.

For adventure seekers, nature lovers, and photographers, Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park provides an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s most dramatic and remote landscapes. Its combination of scenic beauty, rare wildlife, and cultural experiences makes it a must-visit destination in Mongolia and a true gem of the Gobi Desert.
