The Khongor Sand Dunes, also known as Khongoryn Els, are among the most spectacular natural landmarks in Mongolia and a highlight of any journey through the Gobi Desert. Located within Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park in Omnogovi Province, these vast golden dunes stretch for more than 100 kilometers and rise up to 300 meters high, creating a dramatic and ever-changing desert landscape.
Often called the “Singing Dunes,” Khongor is famous for the deep humming sound the sand can produce when the wind blows or when people slide down the slopes. Visitors can climb the steep dunes for breathtaking views over the desert, green oases, and distant mountains, especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.
At the base of the dunes lies the Khongor River, which supports patches of green vegetation and provides grazing land for camels and other livestock. This contrast between towering sand dunes and lush riverbanks makes the area especially striking and photogenic.
Travelers can also experience traditional nomadic life by visiting nearby herding families or staying in a ger (yurt) camp, as well as enjoy activities such as camel riding, hiking, and photography. For nature lovers and adventure seekers, the Khongor Sand Dunes offer an unforgettable desert experience and remain a must-visit destination in southern Mongolia.
