The Dornod Mongol Steppes

The Dornod Mongol Steppes are one of the largest and most pristine grassland ecosystems in the world, stretching endlessly across eastern Mongolia toward the borders of Russia and China. Often compared to the African savannah for their scale and wildlife, these vast open plains offer travelers a rare sense of freedom beneath wide blue skies and an untouched natural horizon.

This region is not only visually stunning but also globally important for conservation. Recognizing the fragile nature of its environment and rare species, Mongolia and international partners have made Dornod the base of a major environmental protection project. Scientists and conservationists study everything from wildfires and grassland health to small mammals and bird migration, helping preserve one of the world’s last great undisturbed steppe ecosystems.

In 1992, three major Strictly Protected Areas (SPAs) were established to safeguard this remarkable landscape. The Dornod Mongol Protected Area, covering more than 570,000 hectares, protects seas of feather grass steppe and nearly 70% of Mongolia’s Mongolian gazelles, which migrate across the plains in massive herds that can reach tens of thousands—one of Asia’s most spectacular wildlife events.

The remote and uninhabited Nomrog Protected Area, spanning over 311,000 hectares, is ecologically unique. It marks the transition between the open steppe and the forested landscapes of Manchuria and is home to rare species such as moose, cranes, otters, and bears, as well as rich river valleys and wetlands.

The Mongol Daguur Protected Area, covering more than 103,000 hectares, is divided into two distinct zones. The northern wetlands and hill steppe near the Russian border protect endemic species like the Daurian hedgehog, while the southern area along the Uuiz River is a vital sanctuary for the endangered white-naped crane and other migratory birds. This reserve forms part of a vast international conservation corridor linking the Siberian taiga with the Inner Asian steppe.

For travelers, the Dornod Steppes offer unforgettable experiences such as wildlife watching, bird photography, horseback trekking, wild camping, and cultural encounters with nomadic herders. With its blend of endless horizons, rare wildlife, and global ecological importance, this region stands as one of Mongolia’s most extraordinary and rewarding natural destinations.
